PROTECT THE WAORANI’S VICTORY AGAINST BIG OIL IN THE AMAZON
Call on Ecuador’s Constitutional Court to guarantee the Waorani people’s right to keep their rainforest free from oil exploitation
The Waorani people of Ecuador’s Amazon are fighting against new oil threats to their territory. In 2019, the Waorani won a historic climate victory in an Ecuadorian court, protecting half a million acres of rainforest from oil drilling. But five years later, in a blatant disregard of the court’s decision, the Ecuadorian Government has announced plans to launch a new oil auction in the region, threatening the Waorani people’s life, culture and biodiverse rainforest territory.
The Amazon rainforest is fast approaching a point of no return. Guaranteeing Indigenous peoples’ right to decide over their futures and their forests is one of the most powerful tools to ensure the protection of the world’s largest rainforest and our global climate.
It is time to support Waorani communities in their struggle for justice and dignity. Add your voice to demand Ecuador’s Constitutional judge Richard Ortiz convene an urgent hearing in Waorani territory and defend the community’s right to free, prior, and informed consent!
