Amazon Frontlines fights the climate crisis by securing indigenous stewardship of the Amazon rainforest. The Position
The Interim Director of Finance will provide full coverage for the Director of Finance during a sabbatical period. The role is responsible for ensuring continuity, stability, and strong oversight of the organization’s finance, compliance, and operations functions during this period.
This assignment requires an experienced nonprofit finance leader with the ability to manage complex budgets ($6M+ annual), multiple funding streams, and compliance requirements in a dynamic, international operating environment. The Interim Director will serve as a member of the senior management team and a trusted advisor to the Executive Director, COO and Board on financial, operational, and risk-related matters.

Primary Responsibilities:
Organizational Leadership
- Participate as a member of the senior management team, contributing to organizational decision-making and strategic discussions.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the organization to foster a culture of professionalism, transparency, collaboration and mutual support.
- Supervise, mentor, and support the Staff Accountant and contract Bookkeeper, ensuring clarity of roles, priorities and workflows.
- Ensure continuity of systems, documentation and institutional knowledge throughout the sabbatical period.
Finance, Accounting and Budgeting
- Manage all accounting and finance operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards (US GAAP).
- Oversee monthly close and financial reporting processes; provide timely, accurate, and decision-useful financial information to budget managers.
- Provide staff support to the Board of Directors as needed, including preparation of financial reports and materials.
- Support activities related to the annual organizational budgeting process.
- Review organizational agreements, contracts, leases, and other legal documents, and provide guidance to the Operations Coordinator on standard templates and compliance considerations.
- Manage all accounting processes, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, reimbursements, domestic and international transfers, and banking transactions.
- Manage organizational bank accounts and credit card programs.
- Serve as administrator of the organization’s accounting and operations platforms, including QuickBooks, Bill.com, and Divvy.
- Maintain and improve accounting and finance systems in line with the analysis and diagnostic completed in December 2025 to support organizational sustainability and growth; update internal finance and operations manuals as needed.
- In coordination with relevant colleagues, liaise with partner accounting personnel for expenses requiring partner engagement or logistical coordination as needed.
Grant Finance and Funds Management
- Support development and program staff in the preparation of grant proposal budgets.
- Lead the preparation of financial reports to donors, ensuring accuracy and compliance with grant agreements.
- Monitor the use of grant funds from a financial perspective and provide regular reporting to leadership on grant balances and burn rates.
- Refine and maintain structures for the financial management of grants to partner organizations.
- Process outgoing grant payments based on signed transfer agreements.
- Maintain schedules of restricted net assets and manage the timely release of funds in accordance with grant terms.
- In collaboration with the Development team, maintain schedules of incoming restricted grants, both actual and projected.
- In collaboration with the Development team, create and maintain restricted funding dashboards for sharing with program teams and leadership.
Payroll and Compensation
- Ensure monthly payroll is processed accurately and on time.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and COO to prepare materials for Board review and approval of significant compensation-related changes, as needed.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure organizational compliance with applicable regulations and oversee risk management practices.
- Maintain appropriate organizational insurance coverage, including Directors & Officers (D&O) and liability insurance; where feasible, support securing comparable insurance products for Ecuador-based operations.
- Oversee implementation and periodic review of organizational finance and operations policies.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Significant experience serving in a senior finance leadership role within a nonprofit organization.
- Demonstrated experience managing annual nonprofit budgets of $6-$8million or more, with diverse funding streams, including foundation funding and other sources.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. nonprofit compliance requirements, including 501(c)(3) regulations and reporting.
- Proven experience overseeing audits, tax filings, and Board-level financial reporting.
- Professional-level fluency in Spanish, with the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken contexts.
- Experience working in or with international or cross-border operations strongly preferred.
