Amazon Frontlines (amazonfrontlines.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in the Amazon region of Ecuador. Amazon Frontlines fights the climate crisis by securing indigenous stewardship of the Amazon rainforest. We build power with Indigenous leaders to form a bulwark of resistance throughout the upper Amazon, working together deep in the forest, at our organizing hub in northeastern Ecuador, and in the halls of power worldwide. Position Description

The Junior Accountant (JA) is responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions at Amazon Frontlines (AF), including accounts receivable and accounts payable, expense reimbursements, and revenue entries. This position ensures timely and accurate processing of financial data, supporting the overall efficiency of the finance team. Under the supervision of the Director of Finance, the JA will work closely with the Staff Accountant (SA) to maintain financial records and ensure compliance with internal policies.

Amazon Frontlines is a multicultural and bilingual team, so we require the candidate to have a high level of English, both written and spoken.

Key Responsibilities:

Accounting & Transaction Processing

  • Perform daily accounting tasks for Amazon Frontlines, keeping our accounting records accurate and up to date.
  • Process all incoming payment requests and vendor invoices on a daily basis, ensuring requests are properly entered and payments move through the approval chain in a timely manner.
  • Verify provided expense documentation, and communicate with relevant staff in cases where documentation doesn’t meet AF standards.
  • Perform regular revenue entry, including grants, gifts, and other income sources and communicate with the Director of Finance and the fundraising team as needed to clarify any revenue details, including fund restrictions.

Expense Reimbursements & Credit Card Transactions

  • Perform accounting review of all reimbursement requests and credit card transactions, verifying accurate and complete documentation and compliance with AF policies and procedures.
  • Communicate professionally with staff to answer any questions or to clarify any missing information and ensure timely processing of reimbursements and credit transactions.

Support for Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Assist the Director of Finance and Staff Accountant in maintaining compliance with AF financial policies and regulatory requirements, and to implement best practices in financial recordkeeping and internal controls.
  • Maintain strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial data entry and reporting.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or technical degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting or bookkeeping, and strong knowledge of Ecuadorian accounting standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to adapt to U.S. GAAP accounting practices and learn new financial systems.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Excel, accounting software and only payment platforms.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (spoken and written).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Physical Requirements

The person in this role is expected to be online during working hours, participate in virtual meetings, read documents, communicate verbally and in writing, and type for extended periods. The position may require occasional travel within the country, approximately once or twice a year.
