Position: Senior Part-Time Finance Consultant
Duration: 3 months with a possibility to extend
Time Commitment: 15-20 hours/week negotiable
Location: Remote/possible trip to Ecuador
Overview and Objectives
The consultant will provide deep experience, a solutions-oriented approach and expert support to strengthen the organization’s financial systems, processes, and internal capacity. This includes conducting a comprehensive diagnostic of current financial operations, engaging with key stakeholders to understand challenges and needs, and delivering actionable recommendations aligned with best practices to streamline budgeting and finance efforts across the organization and enhance financial management practices, ensuring scalability for a larger team and more complex funding sources.
Scope of Work
The consultant will undertake the following tasks:
A. Financial Systems Diagnostic
- Review current financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Assess the adequacy of accounting software and reporting systems, offering thought partnerships around new options when necessary.
- Identify strengths and gaps in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Evaluate compliance with donor requirements and financial regulations.
- Analyze cash flow management, expense tracking, and fund allocation practices.
B. Stakeholder Consultations
- Conduct interviews with key staff (e.g., executive leadership, finance team, development team, operations team, program managers) to understand needs and challenges.
- Review workflows between finance and other departments, in particular programs and development.
- Gather input on pain points and areas for improvement.
C. Recommendations & Implementation Support
- Develop a report outlining findings and prioritized recommendations.
- Provide guidance on system enhancements and best practices.
- Recommend financial tools or software for improved efficiency.
- Support the initial implementation of key improvements as time allows.
- Offer training or coaching to relevant staff if necessary.
Deliverables
- Month 1: Diagnostic report summarizing assessment findings.
- Month 2: Draft recommendations and proposed action plan.
- Month 3: Final recommendations, implementation guidance, and briefing session with leadership team.
Qualifications
- Experience in nonprofit finance, accounting, or financial management, for organizations managing budgets of $10M USD or higher with 10+ income streams, including public and private foundations, major donors and online giving.
- Strong knowledge of financial compliance, donor reporting, and grant management, with known international foundations and donors preferred.
- Familiarity with financial software commonly used by nonprofits.
- Ability to assess financial systems and recommend practical improvements.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills.
- Bilingual (fluent written and spoken English required; at least professional-level proficiency Spanish).
Reporting & Communication
The consultant will report to the COO and the Finance Director and provide regular updates on progress. Check-in meetings will be scheduled on a weekly basis, and as needed.
Compensation & Payment Terms
The consultant will be paid monthly upon receipt of an invoice, based on the completion of the corresponding deliverables.
Reimbursement for any approved travel expenses to Ecuador (if required) will be covered separately by Amazon Frontlines, in accordance with our travel policy. Specific terms will be outlined in the consultancy agreement.
