We’re excited to share that our organization has just received the 2024 Hilton Humanitarian Prize! Often referred to as the Nobel Prize for NGOs, this is the world’s largest humanitarian prize for nonprofit organizations. We’re the first collective of Indigenous and Western activists, the first grassroots climate organization, and the first organization focused on the Amazon and South America to win this award – and we couldn’t feel more proud!

On October 9th, 2024, our dear friend and long-time ally Leonardo DiCaprio presented us with the prize at the official ceremony in Los Angeles. We also received many loving congratulatory messages from artists and activists from around the world including Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Christiana Figueres, Gabriela Hearst, James Cromwell, Dr. Mamphela Ramphele, Farwiza Farhan and Livia Giuggioli Firth.

This prize is an important boost to our movement and bold action for the Amazon! It shows us that the world is waking up to a powerful truth: Indigenous wisdom and frontline action are key solutions to the climate crisis!

For over a decade, we’ve been working tirelessly to protect the Amazon and build solutions to the climate crisis. We’ve grown from securing access to clean water for communities living downstream from oil contamination to winning huge victories that defend the rainforest, advance Indigenous rights, and safeguard our climate. With every step of the way, our work has been guided by the elders, ancestors, and protective spirits of the forest, and inspired by the incredible strength, ingenuity, resilience, and courage of the Amazon’s guardians, from women defenders, youth activists, storytellers, and artists to the land and rights defenders who were tragically killed for protecting what they love most.

We know that the threats to the Amazon and our climate are unrelenting. And that is why we will use this prize —its resources and visibility — to create even more impact on the frontlines, and build the strength of our movement for the survival of the Amazon rainforest and humanity’s future.
